VOYNICH WILFRID: (1865-1930) Polish revolutionary, antiquarian and bibliophile who operated one of the largest rare book businesses in the world and is remembered as the eponym of the Voynich manuscript. A rare T.L.S., Wilfrid M. Voynich, two pages (separate leaves), 4to, New York, 7th June 1921, to Mrs. Junius Morgan. Voynich states that he has heard with great interest from Mrs. Eisenhart that Morgan has an interest in Roger Bacon and intends to translate or edit Roger Bacon, sa vie, ses ouvrages, ses doctrines, d´apres des textes inedits, by Emile Charles, and forwards his correspondent a copy of the 1861 edition for her to make use of as he owns two copies. Voynich also invites his correspondent to consult him on any other works on Bacon, and writes ´Do you know that Oxford University published in 1914, during the Roger Bacon jubilee, a very interesting collection of articles on Bacon, edited by Professor A. G. Little? The book consists of contributions in English, French and German and is prefaced by an interesting biography by Prof. Little. Very likely the book is in the Princeton Library but if not and you would like to consult it I can lend you my copy. The work is very important as it incorporates much new material not known to Charles in 1861 when he published his book. However, rightly or wrongly, I regard that Charles even now is the best work on Bacon, but if it is translated naturally it ought to be edited and annotated´. In concluding Voynich adds that Mrs. Eisenhart had told him that Morgan intends to visit him when she next comes to New York, remarking ´I should be delighted to meet you and to show you my Bacon cipher MS´. Although Voynich feigns to address his correspondent in scholarly terms, the bibliophile was evidently attempting to attract the interest of this very wealthy relative of J. P. Morgan to purchase his manuscript. A pencil quotation from Bacon in an unidentified hand appears to the upper right margin of the first page. Josephine Adams Perry (1869-1963) was the wife of Junius Spencer Morgan (1867-1932) a renowned bibliophile and associate librarian at Princeton, and a nephew of J. P. Morgan, founder of the Morgan Library, to whom he introduced its famous librarian, Belle da Costa Greene (1879-1950).

The Voynich manuscript is widely considered the ´world's most mysterious manuscript, ´ a 15th-century codex that has defied every attempt at decipherment for over a century. The rare book dealer Voynich purchased the manuscript in 1912 from a Jesuit library at Villa Mondragone in Italy. He spent much of his later life promoting the manuscript, famously claiming it would `startle the scientific world´ and was likely the work of the 13th-century philosopher Roger Bacon - a theory that carbon dating of the vellum eventually disproved. Today the manuscript is held at Yale University´s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library ib New Haven, Connecticut.
