Much of his writings has remained unpublished. </p> <p><br /></p> <p>Tehillah Le’David, which was published by the author's grandson, comprises three parts: The first deals with the prominence of the Law; the second with the elements of Faith - which the author regards as superior to speculative reasoning; and the third part focuses upon the principles of the Divine Attributes, Providence and Free Will. </p> <p><br /></p> <p>See I. <p><span style="color:#9C0000"><strong>ENGELBRECHT, MARTIN.</strong></span></p> <p><span style="color:#9C0000"><strong><br /></strong></span></p> <p>“Temple des Juifs.” </p> <p><span style="color:#9C0000"><strong>A rare Jewish ‘peep-show’ diorama</strong></span> depicting the interior of Amsterdam’s resplendent Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue with congregation at celebrating its inauguration. </p> <p><br /></p> <p>Six individual, hand-colored engravings, intricately cut, to be displayed in sequence, of the Synagogue, showing the vaulted interior flanked by Ionic columns; each card adding another pictorial element to make up the whole.</p> <p> </p> <p>Some light stains and wear. 7 x 8.5 inches.</p> <p><span style="color:#9C0000"><strong>* Accompanied by:</strong></span> Fitted wooden display stand. When placed together a 3-D perspective view is created. </p> <p><br /></p> <p><b>Augsburg, c. 1740. </b></p> <p><br /></p> <p>This rare Jewish “pop-up” diorama recreates the inauguration ceremonies of Amsterdam’s Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue. Preceded by Psalm 20… and followed by Psalm 41 and Nefilath Apayim (Tachanun).’</b> <br /><br /> <span>Manuscript in Hebrew. Written in a square Italian hand.</span> <br />One leaf (two pages). Light tears at edges, minor holes and stains. Sm. folio. <br /></p> <p><br />Italy: 1742 <br /><br />Replete with Biblical references, the prayer invokes the Thirteen Divine Attributes, and begs God to order the angels responsible for managing earthly affairs to send a swift deliverance to those suffering sickness, ‘those of natural means as well as unusual circumstances’. </p> <p><br /></p> <p>The Black Death raged throughout Europe intermittently for centuries, with regional epidemics constantly resurfacing and subsiding. As late as 1742, Messina suffered from Italy’s last major outbreak of the plague. Despite various advancements in medicine, the plague still proved fatal, killing nearly two thirds of the city’s inhabitants. The outbreak caused panic throughout Italy, and lasted until 1744. </p> <p><br /></p> <p>With a long tradition of poetic creativity, individual Jewish communities in Italy often created their own prayers and piyyutim to mark various occasions.
