In the letter, the Gaon of Bonyhád records: “A segulah for all ailments of the lungs, Heaven forbid, that one should thoroughly cook the legs of a calf… and drink the broth while hot.”

The Gaon of Bonyhád continues and writes: “This segulah is from the holy righteous one, Moreinu HaRav Rabbi Shalom of Belz, zt"l. One must trust in Hashem at the time of performing the remedy, and the sign for the matter was that the name of the woman and the name of her mother formed the acronym "אמג"ל" which is one of the holy Names.”

He concludes: “One must strengthen his trust, and this suffices for one who understands. And I remain, one who seeks your peace with love, Eliezer Deutsch.”

Many segulos were transmitted from the Sar Shalom of Belz, passed from one person to another, for strengthening emunah, being spared from military service, healing, and more. In his sefer Midbar Kodesh, the Sar Shalom explains the parameters of various segulos, among them the segulah of foods for healing: “Segulos of things that are eaten for various illnesses… for in the matter of the food there is an aspect of healing for that ailment, for the Creator, blessed be He, placed within the nature of created beings the ability to heal this illness through its consumption” (Bamidbar, p. 252).

It is of interest to cite what the Gaon of Bonyhád writes in his sefer Pri HaSadeh, part II, siman 116, regarding the use of segulos: “A segulah is one of the wonders of the creation of the Holy One, blessed be He, Creator of all…”

<b>Rabbi Eliezer Deutsch, Av Beis Din of Bonyhád (1850–1916)</b>, was one of the prominent sages of Hungary and one of the foremost poskim of his era. He was a disciple of Rabbi Yehudah Assad and Rabbi Menachem Eisenstadter. During his period of study in Ungvar, he lodged in the home of the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried and assisted him in the writing of his works, as noted in his approbation to Ohalei Shem and in the introduction to Duda'ei HaSadeh.

He served as Rav of Hanishovitz from 1877 to 1897, and thereafter as Av Beis Din of Bonyhád, where he led a prominent yeshiva gedolah. He authored Tevuos HaSadeh, Chelkas HaSadeh, Siach HaSadeh, and other works. He delivered the hesped for the Admor Rabbi Yehoshua of Belz after his passing on a train in 1894.

The letter was sent to the brilliant gaon Rabbi Chaim Dov Gross, Av Beis Din of Petrova and Rosh Yeshivah in Munkacs, one of the great geonim of his generation. He was exceptionally knowledgeable and an expert in halacha and aggadah, stories of tzaddikim, and the transmission of the generations. He corresponded in halachic matters with the Gedolei Hador. He was a disciple of the Arugas HaBosem, and the Atzei Chaim sent people to him to receive semichah. He was the first to eulogize the Atzei Chaim at his funeral. Many sefarim were published under his editorship, and numerous annotations of his were printed in the sefarim of his time.
