Sent by the gaon Rabbi Yehoshua Krohn, av beit din of Borszczow, to Herzl's heir to the leadership of the Zionist movement, Dr. David Wolfson, second president of the World Zionist Organization, and designer of the Israeli flag. [Borszczow, Poland, presently Ukraine; 1907].

Large circular [Hebrew] text at the top of the page: "May the living G-d inscribe and seal [you] in the book of life." David Wolfson's name appears in the center of the circle with the title "The Zionist" along with the passuk "David was successful in all his ways and Hashem was with him" as well as the verse [combination] written in the corners: "May Hashem bless you and support you from Tziyon." A lyrical blessing for the new year appears across the bottom of the page, in vowelized scribal script. The sender's signature is in the margins of the poster: "Yehoshua Krohn of Borszczow, scion of the author of Sha"ch."

The poster is drawn on one part of a large sheet, and the other part enfolds a lengthy letter in Yiddish as a separate leaf, to Dr. Wolfson. Rabbi Krohn's signature appears in a foreign language in the margins of the letter, along with his stamp.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the sender, Rabbi Yehoshua Krohn, rabbi of Borszczow, and the addressee, Dr. David Wolfson.

[1] large leaf, divided into [2] leaves, 33x21 cm each. (PINKAS).
<<(New York).>> Pinkas Chevrah Kadisha Anshei Makhnivka [The Machnowker Aid Association].

Manuscript in Hebrew and Yiddish written in square and cursive hands on paper. Multicolored artistic title page.
pp. 33 (excluding blanks). Few light stains. Modern boards. Folio.
New York: 1901-22

The volumes opens with a rhyming Hebrew acrostic poem describing the charitable purpose of the society: “To assist swiftly/ our brothers at a time of [Heaven] forfend/ if one of his house should end/ timely aid we will send” (free translation). The acrostic forms the initials of Leib ben Eliyahu Heller, perhaps the scribe / artist as well as composer. After a customary formulaic introduction (“The Rabbis said benevolent kindness is greater than charity, for charity is only for the living, while benevolence is for the living and the dead, ”) the Pinkas lists the 18 Takanot it adopted when established, Pesach of 1901. The rules are typical and procedural, but some of them require strict religious standards (No. 2: ‘One who profanes the Sabbath or Yom Tov publicly, even those rules which are rabbinic’ is excluded. No.3: ‘Shavers with a razor’ are excluded). The names of the thirty original members are subsequently written in a variety of calligraphic scripts. The rest of the pages are lists of the elected officers over the years. A few entries are minutes of meetings written in Yiddish. A fine material record of the activities of one of the many fraternal organizations formed by landsmenshaftn in America. The members, originally from Makhnivka, Ukraine, eventually had plots in four cemeteries in Queens and Long Island (see https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/makhnovka/landsmanshaft.htm). Machnivka’s Jewish population in 1897 was some 2,400, or half the population of the town which was located in Vinnytsia Oblast (see https://www.yadvashem.org/untoldstories/database/index.asp? cid=743). The town also spawned a family of Chassidic Rebbes, a branch of the Chernobyl / Skver dynasty. The current Machnovka Rebbe is Grand Rabbi Yehoshua Rokeach (b. 1949) of Bnei Brak, Israel.

(HUNGARY).
Sefer HaZkarath Neshamoth.

Hebrew manuscript written in square and cursive calligraphic Ashkenazic hands. Principally prepared by Moshe Glick. Title-page finely composed in pen-and-ink.
pp. 38 (excluding blanks). Light wear. Original binding with manuscript inlay pasted onto upper cover, rubbed. 4to.
Tótkomlós (Békés County), Hungary: 1906

This Yizkor-Book for the town of Tótkomlós was written on thick paper with gilt edges by the scribe Moshe Glick for the local Chevra Kadisha headed by Yehudah (Lipot) Itzkowitz and Pesach Levinger. The first sixteen pages are memorials (“Kel Maleh Rachamim”) composed in the scribe’s large, handsome hand for the dead, ranging from 1871-1905. Following these are many more pages in various hands with lists of names to be recited at Yizkor. The names are given in full in Hebrew and generally in Hungarian as well. Jews were only permitted to settle in Tótkomlós and other Hungarian towns after the Revolution of 1848. A Chevra Kadisha and synagogue were established there in 1884 and a Jewish school in 1895. It's Jewish population at the time numbered about 150. See https://dbs.bh.org.il/place/t-o-t-k-o-m-l-o-s.
